Malam Aliyu Damri, a former Head of Mass Communication Department at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, has been released after nearly a month in captivity with bandits in Zamfara State. His release was confirmed in a statement by his family, who were relieved and grateful.
Malam Damri was abducted along with his son and six others on January 21, 2025, from their residence in Bakura town, the capital of Bakura Local Government Area in Zamfara State. The victims were abducted by bandits who stormed into the community, the latest in a spate of kidnappings in the region.

While details of the release are unclear, the family shied away from revealing whether a ransom had been paid or if security agents were involved in securing their release. They, however, talked of unimaginable joy and relief in a statement: “We are highly thrilled for his freedom and pray Allah to grant him a swift recovery from the shock of this traumatic experience.”
Malam Damri’s abduction highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara, where banditry continues to plague local communities. The incident also adds to the growing concern over the safety of residents, particularly in the northern part of Nigeria.
