GistNexus – 27th February, 2025.
During the fatal attack, which occurred in the night of Tuesday, February 25, Boko Haram suspects attacked Kwapre and neighboring villages within the Yadul District of Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
The attackers struck at about 7:30 p.m., going on till the early hours of Wednesday, February 26. The attack was one of destruction, as schools, churches, houses, and business centers were left in ruins, and other valuables were taken away by the insurgents.

The Head of Kwapre village, Mr. Joel Kulaha, and his counterpart from King village, Mr. Abalis Jawaja, told the tale of the terrifying attack, explaining how the terrorists attacked with deadly precision, setting structures ablaze and taking away anything they could. “There was no death in this attack since we had been warned early and abandoned our homes prior to the attackers’ arrival,” Kulaha elaborated. “We escaped with our lives, but everything we owned has been destroyed or stolen,” he lamented.
Though the attack resulted in massive destruction of property, no fatalities were reported since a majority of the residents had fled before the time the militants began destroying everything.
The terrorists, in their characteristic terrorizing fashion, burned down churches, schools, and other structures in a well-planned and synchronized attack. Schools that had children at the time of the attack were evacuated as the children ran for safety in a panic during the chaos. The shops and other business entities were also attacked by the militants as they left a trail of destruction while taking away valuable items as they withdrew.

Troops deployed in the nearby town of Garaha later responded to the attack. By that time, though, the majority of the damage had already been inflicted. A short exchange of fire between the soldiers and the insurgents took place and this caused the attackers to return to their camps. The response by the military came even though the attack already caused serious damage to the civilians.

Residents and witnesses said although the military response was prompt, it was too late to avert the massive destruction. The attack is just one in the long series of insecurity for Adamawa State communities, especially Kwapre and surrounding villages, which have been frequently attacked by Boko Haram insurgents since the insurgency started.
The incident is said to be the tenth attack on Kwapre and surrounding villages, a sign of the constant danger that these villages are exposed to. Boko Haram has persisted in terrorizing the area despite the intervention of local security agencies, with residents in constant fear of attack.
In the aftermath of the attack, local leaders have urged the government to more aggressively protect these vulnerable communities. The people of Kwapre, however, are left to gather the pieces of their shattered lives, as the destruction wrought by the insurgents continues to traumatize them.
As the security forces count the cost and try to restore order, the villagers must start all over again to reconstruct their homes and businesses. The attack is still fresh in the memories of the survivors, who are trying to come to terms with the loss of livelihood and homes. The community’s resilience is being pushed to the limit, but despite all odds, they are determined to start their lives afresh.

The constant attacks from Boko Haram have left many in Adamawa State feeling vulnerable and insecure. Despite efforts by the military to quell the insurgency, the terrorists continue to attack with impunity, leaving a trail of destruction and terror wherever they go. As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that more needs to be done to protect these communities and prevent further loss of life and property.
The government’s reaction to the continuing insurgency will be critical in determining whether or not villages such as Kwapre can start to rebuild and achieve some sort of peace. For the time being, though, the people of Kwapre and other villages are living in limbo, waiting and hoping that the next attack does not occur in the middle of the night when they are least expecting it.
In the wake of the attack, there are calls for security to be tightened, especially in rural areas that are most frequently targeted by the insurgents. The Nigerian army is under immense pressure to contain the Boko Haram threat, but assaults on villages like Kwapre serve as a harsh reminder of the scale of the threat and the necessity for a more effective response. As the quest for a lasting solution to the Boko Haram insurgency is ongoing, citizens of Adamawa State are undaunted in their expectation of peace and stability. They anticipate a brighter tomorrow on the strength of the government’s and security agencies’ capacity to protect their communities and put an end to the reign of terror that has daunted the region for so long. This recent assault serves as a reminder that the war against Boko Haram is far from being won, and that Adamawa State people will have their resolve tested for a while longer with frequent violence. Recovery may have a long way to go, but the resolve to rebuild will be central to getting communities like Kwapre to start thinking about the future and take back some semblance of normalcy for their lives.
