March 5, 2025 – Ezza South, Ebonyi, Nigeria
The Ebonyi State Police Command arrested a suspect, Chigozie Ovuta, for the alleged possession of two human skulls and three locally made firearms. The arrest, which took place in the Okoffia community in the Ezza South Local Government Area, has raised serious concerns about illegal rituals and criminality in the zone.

Chigozie Ovuta, an indigene of the Okoffia community, was apprehended with the human skulls and the firearms in a routine police exercise. The reason for the suspect’s possession of the skulls, as unfolded by his confession during interrogation, was shocking. The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed that Ovuta confessed that the skulls were to be used for the preparation of a spiritual concoction, typically applied in ritual practices.
“Upon further questioning, Chigozie readily confessed that the human skulls were handed over to him for the preparation of a spiritual concoction,” Ukandu said. “We are on the track of the individual who handed over these skulls to him for ritual.”

In a separate operation, police officers on the lookout for a stolen tricycle busted an illegal syndicate repainting stolen tricycles. The syndicate, which spans neighboring states, repaints stolen vehicles to disguise their identities. A number of arrests and the recovery of many stolen tricycles resulted from this operation.
The suspects, Nweke Chukwudi, Nwankwo Obinna, John Abba, and Uche Abba, were found in possession of three tricycles that they had stolen and altered. The suspects admitted to stealing the vehicles from their accomplices and changing their colors in order to sell them again.
“All four suspects are in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete,” SP Ukandu confirmed. “The police are still working to get more information on the operations of the syndicate and to bring all the parties involved to book.”
The government has assured the public that it will do all it can to dismantle criminal groups operating in the state and other places, particularly those that trade in illegal human parts and stolen properties. The police are trying their best to ensure security and protection for the people of Ebonyi.
Ovuta’s arrest and the discovery of the tricycle modification syndicate are indicative of the ongoing problems of the law enforcers in the region. The police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and inform the authorities of any suspicious behavior, as they continue their crackdown against criminal gangs.
The issue is still under investigation, and further details are expected to emerge as police enhance their investigations. All the suspects who have been implicated in the criminal activities will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
