11th March, 2025 – Bristol, UK.
In a shocking crime, 17-year-old Mali Bennett-Smith was ordered to serve a life sentence for murdering his 19-year-old sister Luka Bennett-Smith. The judge, in his ruling at Bristol Crown Court on Monday, is a dark end to the tragic tragedy, which occurred on October 20th last year at their house in the St Andrews section of Bristol.
The case facts, revealed by the trial hearings, depict a somber picture of escalating hostility and staged violence. Bennett-Smith had confessed to stabbing and strangling his sister many times, stating that he was “annoyed” with her and had wished to kill her.

From court testimony, Bennett-Smith enticed his sister into letting her guard down before attacking her fatally. He explained to the police that he had requested Luka if he could try out a headlock on her, a move they had supposedly performed before. Luka agreed, as long as she could tap his arm to make him release.
But on this one, Bennett-Smith was not going to budge. In a written statement to the police, he admitted, “On this occasion I had decided I was not going to stop, I wanted to kill her, I had enough with regards she had been treating me over the years and recently.”
Following the attack, Bennett-Smith stayed for about 20 minutes before calling emergency services. He calmly told the operator, “I stabbed my sister to death,” and that he had “hated her my whole life and I don’t know, I just didn’t want to ever see her again.”
Family Torn Apart
Judge William Hart, the case presiding judge, recognized the tremendous loss the Bennett-Smith family experienced due to the crime. “The horror of their loss of their daughter at the hands of their son whom they still love is beyond even the worst nightmares,” he expressed, noting the fact that the parents had virtually lost two children with this tragedy.
The court learned that the family of Bennett-Smith had moved from New Zealand to the UK as Mali’s parents broke up. Mali, his brother Luka, and mother moved on seeking a new start, with Mali initially taking an Army career-college course first. He soon dropped out of college.
Ray Tully KC, representing Bennett-Smith, brought mitigating factors into play in the defense of his client. He highlighted Bennett-Smith’s dyslexia and dysgraphia, learning disabilities that have a significant effect on reading and writing abilities. Tully also spoke of Bennett-Smith’s “unconventional upbringing,” which had involved spending much time immersed in video games, leading to a lack of connection with reality.

“Mali was not able to manage his growing resentment and frustration at Luka,” Tully countered, insisting his client’s problems of development had also contributed to his inability to manage his emotions. Tully insisted Bennett-Smith did “genuine remorse” for what he had done.
Judge’s Verdict and Sentence
Ignoring the protest of defense counsel, Judge Hart underscored the seriousness of the crime and the necessity of a harsh punishment. “The murder was atrocious and horrifying,” he explained, highlighting the fact that it had taken the life of Luka, destroyed her parents’ lives, and would deprive Bennett-Smith of liberty.
Bennett-Smith was given life imprisonment with a minimum of 10 years and five months. This implies that he will spend at least this period in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Aftermath and Community Response
After the sentencing, Avon and Somerset Police Detective Inspector Nadine Partridge had offered her condolences to Luka’s family. “Our thoughts are still very much with Luka’s family at this time,” she added, continuing to state that specially trained family liaison officers would remain to support them.
The case has generated far-reaching discussion regarding the causes of this horrific tragedy. Mental health professionals have highlighted the need for early intervention in people who are having trouble managing their emotions as well as the dangers of excessive gaming and social isolation.
Reporting Restrictions Lifted
Judge Hart ruled to remove reporting bans on referring to the defendant, after an application was submitted by PA Media, a news agency. The ruling permits reporting of full facts of the case, thus encouraging transparency and accountability.
